I have over 30 years experience of helping people with a wide variety of family and mental health problems including 15 years experience as a Psychosexual Therapist in the Health Service. My specific training and experience can help you if you have difficulties with any of the following:

  • Psychological trauma
  • Self esteem
  • Anger management
  • Family relationships and marital problems
  • Difficulties resulting from emotional, physical or sexual abuse
  • Mental health issues, Anxiety and depression
  • Stress related problems including work stress

Recent or distant past events can be at the root of present difficulties for example anxiety, depression or compulsive behaviours. Counselling and psychotherapy can help to resolve those underlying issues and enable you to learn simple techniques to manage your life better.

Counselling begins with an assessment session, (1 hour), at which your problems and needs are clarified and we jointly agree on a way to work together to meet those needs, usually within a specific number of sessions. The time required will vary depending on the complexity of your situation.

The terms counselling and psychotherapy are often used to describe the same process but differences are sometimes identified. Both processes enable people to describe their problem, express their feelings and begin to explore solutions to that problem. Each depends upon a relationship of trust developing between client and therapist. Counselling is more often short term eg 6-10 sessions and is generally more suited to less complex problems of recent origin.

Psychotherapy is often used to describe a psychodynamic approach which is applicable to more complex difficulties that may have their origin in childhood experiences. Psychotherapy is usually a longer term process which allows unconscious material to become conscious thereby enabling the client to understand the root of their problem and to process the unresolved thoughts and emotions associated with that material. The psychotherapist will offer interpretations of the clients behaviour including interpretation of their dreams and fantasies to increase client insights.

In my experience each person has unique needs which bring them for help and a single approach will not suit everyone. I therefore tailor my approach to meet the individual needs and wishes of each client. This means that I may at times use interventions which include person centred, solution focused, cognitive, systemic or psychodynamic interventions.

Fees

A 1 hour session for individuals or couples costs £40.00 per session although concessions are available in exceptional circumstances. Payment is usually made by cash or cheque at each session or can also be prepaid by using online payments. Organisational rates are negotiable.
